Base64 is reversible encoding, not encryption. UTF-8 is used so non-English text and emoji can round-trip. URL-safe mode replaces plus and slash with hyphen and underscore. A data URI includes a MIME type before the encoded payload.
The text Hello encodes to SGVsbG8=. An image data URI begins with data:image/png;base64, followed by the encoded bytes.

When this helps
Inspect a payload, embed a small image in a stylesheet, or move binary data through a text-only format. Base64 typically increases binary data size by about one third.
A little more clarity.
What to know before you go.
Does it support emoji?
Yes. Text is encoded and decoded using UTF-8 rather than the older Latin-1-only approach.
Can I decode an image?
Yes. Use File mode and paste a data URI or Base64. Download the decoded bytes.
Is Base64 a secure way to hide secrets?
No. Anyone can decode it. Use encryption when confidentiality is needed.
Are URL-safe values accepted?
Yes. Hyphens and underscores are normalized, and valid missing padding is restored.
