Photographs usually compress best as JPG or WebP. PNG quality 100 keeps all colors; lower values optimize the color palette while retaining transparency. Settings changes automatically recompress the original image. Target mode searches for a fitting quality and, when Allow smaller dimensions is enabled, reduces pixel dimensions if quality alone cannot fit. Review the preview and final dimensions before downloading.
For a form that accepts 100KB attachments, enter 100 in Target size. If the original is already below the limit, it is returned unchanged.

When this helps
Prepare email attachments, reduce the weight of product photos, or meet a document upload limit. Check fine text and sharp edges in the preview before publishing.
A little more clarity.
What to know before you go.
Will image dimensions change?
Normal compression keeps the original dimensions. In target-size mode, Allow smaller dimensions can reduce them to meet the limit. Turn that option off to retain the original dimensions. The result shows the final width and height.
What happens to photo metadata?
Re-encoded images lose EXIF metadata. If an image is already optimized and its original is returned unchanged, its metadata remains.
Does target-size compression work for PNG?
Yes. PNG uses palette optimization, quality search, and optional dimension reduction. Very small limits can still be below the format’s minimum size; the result explicitly reports Target met or Over target.
Are animated images supported?
Animated GIF and APNG files are flagged. Converting them creates a still image; animation is not preserved.
